Tribute Ceremony as Part of the Closing Ceremony of the Birth Centenary Celebrations of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Date: 8th September 2026 Time: 9:30 AM onwards Venue: Demow College Campus Organized by: Demow College A tribute ceremony was organized by Centre for Performing Arts, Demow College on 8th September 2026 as part of the closing ceremony of the birth centenary celebrations of the legendary Assamese cultural icon, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. The event was held to commemorate his remarkable contributions to Assamese culture, music, literature, and humanity, and to pay tribute to his enduring legacy. The programme began with the lighting of a diya in front of the portrait of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika by the Vice Principal, Mr. Pabitra Gogoi. He also spoke briefly about the significance of the occasion and the lasting legacy of Dr. Hazarika. This was followed by the welcome address by the Principal, Dr. Krishna Jyoti Handique. The Principal, Vice Principal, and IQAC Coordinator, Dr. Wakidur Rohman, then offered floral tributes to the maestro. Students also came forward one by one to offer flowers and pay their respects. The programme was anchored by Yasmina Begum, a student of the 1st Semester, who conducted the proceedings smoothly. At around 10:30 AM, a communal gathering of students was held as the next part of the programme. Dr. Wakidur Rohman spoke about the importance of remembering and carrying forward the legacy of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. He spoke about how his ideas, music, and message of humanity continue to remain relevant even today. This was followed by speeches from the students. Sanghamitra Handique, a student of the 3rd Semester, spoke about Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and his contributions to Assam. Amlanjyoti Bhattacharya, also from the 3rd Semester, spoke about his life and works and the impact he continues to have on generations of people. The programme ended with everyone coming together to sing “Manuhe Manuhor Babe,” one of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's most loved and meaningful songs. The song carries a simple yet powerful message that we must stand by one another and help those in need because, above all, we are human beings. Singing the song together created a warm sense of unity among the students and brought the programme to a meaningful close. The entire event was recorded and photographed by Chandan Gogoi and Bitupon Handique, students of Demow College, who helped preserve the moments of the programme for future remembrance. The tribute ceremony was a simple yet heartfelt way of remembering Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and celebrating the values he stood for i.e. humanity, compassion, unity, and love for his people and his land.
